Day 13

Today was a very productive day (150+ photos to go through, and that’s after the first round of deletion) for a second round of Spotted Cock modelling. Fashion photography never interested me previously, but a few key pointers.

1. The flash unit is bad for all the reasons why it’s so good; it creates its own lighting, thereby destroying the ambience. However, it’s sometimes necessary when you don’t want to lug around external light equipment.

2. It’s not about the fashion, but the models. You just have to make sure whatever they’re fashioning is in the frame. That’s obvious, yet I still cut off the edges of the clothing, which I blame more for the 350D’s poor alignment of the viewfinder than anything else, since I was very attentive to framing.

3. Unlike journalistic/sports photography, the action never comes to you – you’ve got to move in close, switch the height of the angles, move the lights around, stand on chairs, lie on your side, and get the most telling angles. If you’re in a room with low ceiling, you may feel frustrated.

4. If you’re a bankrupt college student, you’ll lose a lot of photographs to bad lighting, a lack of space, people in the background, long shutter speeds, even worse graininess, corrupt colour temperatures, and people who are uncomfortable that you are only a foot away with a camera taking dozens of shots.

Despite that, it’s the single most fun kind of photography, not to be confused with photography to document fun kinds of activities. Photography changes from a means to an ends, resulting in much more satisfying pictures.
